Kasauli is approximately sixty-five kilometres from Chandigarh. The drive takes approximately 90 minutes to two hours via NH-5 through Parwanoo, with the final ridge climb adding about thirty minutes. From Chandigarh airport, plan three hours door-to-door. From Delhi, plan five to six hours via the same Chandigarh-Parwanoo corridor.
The route in plain English
The recommended route is NH-5. From Chandigarh, head north toward Panchkula. The road is four-laned and straightforward as far as Parwanoo, the Himachal-Haryana border at the foot of the hills. From Parwanoo, the ridge road climbs through Dharampur, Sanwara, and Kumarhatti before turning off for Kasauli proper at Garkhal. The final stretch from Garkhal to Kasauli town is short but steep.
The alternative – the Kalka-Solan route – is mostly used by drivers continuing past Kasauli to Solan or Shimla. For Kasauli specifically, the Parwanoo-Garkhal route is the cleaner choice.
How long it actually takes
In light traffic and good weather, the drive is approximately 90 minutes to two hours. That assumes no unexpected stops and no weather delay.
Allow more time on summer weekends. June and parts of May see the heaviest hill traffic. Monsoon, July to mid-September, adds time for road conditions; the road is well-maintained but can have intermittent slips. Winter is fast, except on rare snowy days when the higher reaches towards Kumarhatti and Garkhal need caution.
Festival weekends – Holi, Diwali, the Independence Day weekend, the Christmas-New Year corridor – all add fifteen to thirty minutes either way.
Stops worth making
For first-time visitors, three stops genuinely add to the drive rather than pad it.
Pinjore Garden, fifteen minutes north of Chandigarh, is a Mughal-era walled garden with an excellent ground-floor restaurant. Forty-five minutes is enough.
Timber Trail at Parwanoo offers a cable car to a hill-top viewpoint. With children, this is a memorable break. Allow ninety minutes if you take the cable car.
Dharampur, on the climb, has a long-standing dhaba culture. Several reliable spots serve good north-Indian food. A meal here breaks the climb naturally.
With children
A non-negotiable break at Parwanoo or Pinjore makes the drive much easier. Children’s tolerance for hill curves drops sharply after ninety minutes.
The Parwanoo-to-Kasauli stretch is the curviest part. Front-seat seating helps for older children prone to motion sickness. Light food only between Parwanoo and Kasauli.
Pack water and dry snacks for the car. Mobile signal drops in patches between Sanwara and Garkhal; download maps offline before you start.
From Chandigarh airport specifically
Chandigarh International (IXC) sits south of the city. Allow twenty to thirty minutes from the airport to NH-5. From there, the drive to Kasauli adds approximately 90 minutes to two hours. Plan three hours door-to-door, and pad to three-and-a-half on weekends or in monsoon.
A pre-arranged car at the airport saves the friction of negotiating with a counter taxi after a long flight.
From Delhi via Chandigarh
The Delhi-Kasauli drive is five to six hours in good conditions. Most drivers split it: Delhi-Chandigarh in three hours via the expressway, a stop in Chandigarh for forty minutes, then Chandigarh-Kasauli in approximately 90 minutes to two hours.
Trying to do it in one continuous five-hour push without a stop is unwise with children, and not advisable with elderly passengers.
To Kasauli Green by Vamika Builders
The Kasauli Green site is on the Kasauli ridge, accessed via the standard Garkhal turn-off. From the turn-off, the property is a short final drive. The site itself has parking; access is by car only. For visitors driving for the first time, the Vamika site team can share live coordinates and a short video of the final approach.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Kasauli from Chandigarh airport?
Approximately sixty-five kilometres, about 90 minutes to two hours by road.
Is the drive safe at night?
The NH-5 stretch is well-lit and safe. The Parwanoo-Garkhal climb after dark is manageable for experienced hill drivers but not recommended for first-timers, especially in monsoon.
Can the drive be done in one day there and back?
Yes, easily. Many Tricity residents do day trips. Six hours of drive in total leaves time for lunch in Kasauli and a return before evening.
Is there a train option?
The Kalka-Shimla narrow-gauge train passes through the area but does not serve Kasauli directly. The closest railhead is Kalka, twenty-five kilometres away. The drive is faster.
